A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, and Linux

Axminster is a game made in two weeks as an excuse to look at Godot. It's heavily inspired by Magic Carpet, the Bullfrog classic from 1994. Reshape the land and restore the world to equilibrium by killing the nasty beasties and collecting the mana inside!

There's no real art, everything is built out of primitives and can be generously described as 'game jam quality'. Also there's only one level. But it's a great* level! (* Fine. It's fine.)

How to play:

Collect spells (glowing blue jars on the ground) by flying into them. Helpfully the first one is right in front of you - the 'claim mana' spell. When you pick it up it'll be auto-assigned to your alternate fire button (RMB or right shoulder). Other spells you pick up will be assigned to your primary fire (LMB or right trigger).

Mana exists in the world as golden orbs (yellow balls to you and me) - cast your claim mana spell at them and they'll change to your colour. Once you've built a castle (with another spell), your hot air balloon will trundle about collecting any mana you've marked and bringing it back to your castle. Upgrade your castle with the castle spell to increase the amount of mana it can store. Once you've collected enough (indicated by the notch on the castle mana bar), you've restored the world to equilibrium and won, hooray for you!

You can also claim villages - clusters of tents and small buildings. These count towards your mana regeneration rate.

Casting spells costs mana, and your mana and health regenerate slowly over time. The speed they regenerate increases as you claim more mana, and happens much faster at your castle (so build a castle as soon as you can, and fly home regularly!)

If you die, as long as you have a castle you'll respawn - but lose all your mana. You can go back to the place you died and claim your body to regain it all in one go. If you die without a castle, it's game over.

Controls:

Keyboard+Mouse and controllers are supported.

Keyboard+Mouse:

- WASD to move forward, backward, and strafe

- Q and E to move up and down

- 1-5 to select primary spell

- Enter to show map screen

- Escape to bring up pause menu/settings screen

- F2 to bring up the Special Debug Info For Special Nerds

Controller:

- left stick to move

- right stick to look

- left trigger and should to move up and down

- right trigger: cast primary spell

- right shoulder: cast claim mana

- D-pad: quick select spells 1-4

- this was fine until I added a fifth spell, so the top face button (Xbox Y) cycles through primary spells too

Known Issues:

- I've once seen the player be unable to cast fireballs - they immediately explode. Couldn't repro it. Weird.

- You can get a squished castle if you reposition it while it's growing

- It's possible to make a worm or dragon's head come off if you cast earthquake near them

- The performance when casting volcano is *terrible*. I could claim this is faithful to the original, as that slowed to a crawl when you did a lot of terrain deformation too.. but the reality is it's just my awful code. I imagine I'll fix it later...

- there's no 'play again' button on the game over screen - this is because for some reason reloading causes the terrain to lose textures
